SymbolWords not working?

I am trying to create a syntax highlighter for gtkrc files. As they have no extension, I just select it from the "Syntax highlighter" drop-down menu.
Under Options I have the following:

Symbols=()[]{}<>,:*
SymbolWordsA={ }

According to the help file, this should allow highlighting curly braces with a different color than defined for "Symbols".
The customization dialog does show SymbolWordsA, B, and C, however, the highlighting remains the same as defined for "Symbols".
Am I missing another setting somewhere? I am running version 15.62-portable.

Edit:
I assign a bogus extension (.gtkrc) so it will show in the drop-down menuj.
