FIXED: Local CHM-help error since V14.6x on Win7

Post by micha_he »

Hi.

The CHM-help produce an error message, if it's copied to a Win7 machine.
The versions before V14.6x (August 2020) are working.

This is the error, which I receive:

I'll tested V14.90.4 (help-file 2021-05-05) under Win7: The error still exists !

How do you open the help file? Help menu item? As external tool? ...

Both. With 'F1' in RJTED and with explorer-doubleclick in the folder '...\AppData\Roaming\RJ TextEd\Help'.
Both result in the same error.

Have a look at https://helpman.it-authoring.com/viewto ... 90&p=61222 no solution is given there, but strong suggestion that it has nothing to do with Windows version (but with particular Windows environment); here https://stackoverflow.com/questions/274 ... e-debugger suggestion is to start hh.exe in Admin mode and see if it helps.

(I don't have any problem with opening said CHM file in explorer/file manager, but my Windows account has admin privileges.)

Check in the file properties (RClick on file in the explorer) that the file is not marked as blocked)

(or delete the chm file and re-install RJ TextEd)

File is not marked as blocked or anything else.
Start 'hh.exe' as admin with 'RJ TextEd.chm' as argument, results in the same error.
The location of the helpfile is irrelevant.
An help-file-version from V14.41 (01/2020) works. Noticeable: This version didn't have a blank in the filename yet !?
But, rename the help-file doesn't change anything.

Which version of IE do you have installed on this machine?

I think this may be the reason: the screenshot you posted mentions error in jQuery 3.3.1, which requires at least IE9 (jQuery is embedded in the CHM; btw. in the file I have downloaded from the site it is 3.5.1). My guess is that you need to upgrade your IE to at least 9 (or to 11, because why not?) for it to work.

That's a problem... but only a little...
IE9 or newer isn't allowed from our IT-Sec. Then I'll wait for a new Win10 workstation pc.
